Why One Complication Outlasted the Rest

Few ideas have shaped modern watchmaking more profoundly than the chronograph.

Watchmaking has produced complications of remarkable ambition. Perpetual calendars that track leap years without correction. Minute repeaters that sound the hour on demand. Tourbillons conceived to answer the effect of gravity on a balance.

All are admired. Few are used.

The chronograph is the exception. It is the complication owners actually operate, often daily, sometimes for no reason beyond the satisfaction of doing so. It gave the wristwatch a purpose beyond telling the time, and in doing so it changed what an entire century expected a watch to be capable of.

That change took more than a hundred years to arrive. It began with an instrument built to watch the stars.

Who Invented the Chronograph?

For most of the last two centuries the answer was Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec. In 1821 he built a timing device at the request of King Louis XVIII, intended to measure horse races at the Champ de Mars. It recorded elapsed time by depositing ink onto a rotating dial, which is where the name comes from: chronos for time, graph for writing. The time writer.

That history was revised in 2013. A device signed by Louis Moinet and dated 1816 was authenticated and presented at Neuchâtel, a compteur de tierces, or thirds counter, built for timing astronomical observations. It offered start, stop and reset, measured to a sixtieth of a second, and ran at a frequency that would be considered high even today.

Moinet built the earliest known chronograph. Rieussec gave the instrument its name and brought the idea to market. Like many milestones in horology, the chronograph has more than one legitimate origin story, and the distinction is worth preserving rather than collapsing into a single account.

Neither man, however, produced a chronograph in the sense the word now carries. Their instruments measured intervals without telling the time. The complication we recognise today required one further refinement, developed in the middle of the nineteenth century by the Swiss watchmaker Adolphe Nicole: a mechanism that returned the timing hand to zero on command. Until that existed, a chronograph could be read once and then had to be reset by hand.

Reset to zero is the moment the chronograph stopped being an instrument and started becoming a watch.

How Did the Chronograph Reach the Wrist?

The wristwatch was slow to be taken seriously. For decades it was regarded as jewellery rather than equipment, and the chronograph remained a pocket watch or a boxed timer used by professionals who needed one.

That changed in 1913, when Longines produced the calibre 13.33Z, widely considered the first chronograph movement designed for the wrist rather than adapted from a pocket watch. It was operated entirely through the crown: one press to start, another to stop, a third to reset. In 1915 Breitling moved the chronograph control away from the crown to a dedicated pusher at two o'clock, a small change that made the complication meaningfully easier to use. In 1934 Willy Breitling patented a second pusher at four o'clock, separating start and stop from reset.

That last arrangement became the convention, and it remains the layout on almost every chronograph made since.

The record is less settled than it is usually presented. In 2020 a Longines 13.33Z that left the factory in 1929 was identified with both two pushers and a flyback function, predating claims that had stood for decades. Manufacturing records from the period are incomplete, and horological firsts are revised more often than the industry likes to admit. What is not in dispute is the direction of travel: within twenty years the chronograph moved from a specialist's instrument to something a person could wear and operate without thinking about it.

What Turned an Instrument Into an Everyday Watch?

Two things. Sealing, and scales.

Water and dust were the defining practical problems of the early wristwatch, and the Rolex Oyster case of 1926 reset what buyers expected of durability. A chronograph presented a harder version of the same problem, because every pusher is another opening in the case. Sealing a crown was difficult. Sealing a crown and two pushers was a different order of engineering.

Patek Philippe answered it in 1940 with the Reference 1463, its first waterproof chronograph and the only one the maison produced during the twentieth century. Roughly 750 examples were made across around twenty five years of production. Collectors named it Tasti Tondi, Italian for round buttons, after the rounded pushers that replaced the flat rectangular pushers of the period. Those pushers were not a stylistic decision. Their shape reduced snagging, improved grip and sealed more cleanly against the case.

The scales did the rest. A tachymeter converts elapsed seconds into speed over a known distance. A telemeter measures distance by the gap between something seen and something heard. A pulsometer counts heartbeats. Drivers, engineers, doctors, pilots and navigators each had a version of the same requirement, and the chronograph dial became a calculator that happened to sit on the wrist.

A watch that solved practical problems for people who were not collectors is precisely how the chronograph earned its permanence.

The Year the Complication Changed Again

By the 1960s the chronograph had one conspicuous gap. Automatic winding had transformed ordinary watches, but chronographs were still wound by hand.

Three separate projects resolved it in the same year. Zenith announced the El Primero in January 1969. A consortium of Heuer, Breitling, Buren-Hamilton and Dubois-Depraz presented the Chronomatic, later known as Calibre 11, in March. Seiko's 6139 reached buyers around May.

Which of them was genuinely first is still argued, and the argument turns on definitions. Zenith announced earliest. Seiko appears to have reached the market earliest. The consortium was first among the Swiss to sell. Each claim is defensible, which is usually a sign that the achievement belonged to the moment rather than to any one company.

Quartz arrived almost immediately afterwards and reordered the industry. The chronograph survived that period better than most complications, for a reason worth noticing: people did not keep chronographs because they needed to measure anything. They kept them because they liked using them.

Why Does the Chronograph Still Matter?

Almost nobody times a lap. Phones measure intervals more accurately than any mechanical chronograph ever has, and they do it without being wound, serviced or thought about.

The chronograph endures anyway, because it is the only complication that asks to be touched.

Every other function on a watch performs quietly and without instruction. A date changes itself. A moonphase advances whether anyone is watching. A chronograph waits. It does nothing until a person decides it should, and then it responds immediately, mechanically and with a distinct sound and feel. That exchange is repeated hundreds of times across the life of a watch, and it is the closest thing horology offers to a conversation between owner and object.

It also explains why chronograph design has changed so little. The two pusher layout, the balanced registers, the peripheral scale and the disciplined typography all survive because they organise a large amount of information without confusion. They were arrived at through function, and function has not changed.

For CZARD, that history is not simply admired. It informs a deliberate choice. The VENI, VIDI and VICI collections use a VK61 meca-quartz chronograph movement, in which quartz regulates normal timekeeping while the chronograph itself is mechanically actuated. Only the chronograph seconds hand sweeps while timing is in progress, since the running seconds ticks as any quartz movement does. It was chosen because it preserves the mechanical feel of operating a chronograph alongside the reliability expected of a watch worn every day.

The chronograph was never only about measuring time. It was about giving people the ability to measure moments that mattered.

Two centuries later, that remains its greatest complication.
