The Question Behind Every Movement

Two watches can share a case size, a dial layout and a set of hands, and still be entirely different objects to live with.

The difference sits underneath, in the movement, and it is the part of a watch most buyers understand least. Specification sheets name a calibre and move on. The name means little without knowing what it changes about the watch on your wrist each morning.

There are two movement types that matter most to anyone buying a chronograph or a dress automatic today. One is the Swiss mechanical automatic, the oldest continuous tradition in watchmaking. The other is meca-quartz, a comparatively recent answer to a specific problem.

Neither is a lesser version of the other. They are answers to different questions.

What Is a Mechanical Automatic?

A mechanical automatic is powered entirely by stored physical energy, with no battery and no electronics of any kind.

A weighted rotor sits on the back of the movement and pivots freely as the wrist moves. That motion winds a mainspring, a coiled ribbon of steel that holds the energy. The mainspring releases that energy gradually through a train of gears, regulated by a balance wheel oscillating back and forth at a fixed rate, which is what keeps the hands moving at the correct speed rather than unwinding all at once.

Everything the watch does is mechanical. Nothing is measured electronically or corrected by a circuit.

That has consequences the owner notices. The seconds hand sweeps rather than ticks, because the balance oscillates several times per second and the hand advances with each beat. The watch runs down if it is left unworn, and needs winding or a few hours of wear to start again. It requires periodic servicing, because oils degrade and parts wear.

A properly serviced mechanical movement can run for generations, which is why watches built in the middle of the last century continue keeping time today.

What Is Meca-Quartz?

Meca-quartz is the less familiar of the two, and it exists because of a specific problem with chronographs.

A conventional quartz chronograph is accurate and inexpensive to produce, but it feels inert. The pushers have little resistance. The chronograph hand jumps rather than sweeps. Nothing about operating it resembles the experience that made chronographs desirable in the first place.

A mechanical chronograph solves that, but at considerable cost and complexity.

Meca-quartz takes a third route by dividing the work. Quartz regulates normal timekeeping, using an oscillating crystal to deliver the accuracy quartz is known for. The chronograph, however, is mechanically actuated, with a physical module engaging when the pusher is pressed.

The result is worth stating precisely, because it is often described loosely. Only the chronograph seconds hand sweeps while timing is in progress. The running seconds ticks like any quartz watch. The pushers have genuine mechanical resistance, and the reset returns the hand to zero with a snap rather than a slow crawl.

The best-known movements of this type come from Seiko's TMI division, including the VK64 used in CZARD's VENI, VIDI and VICI chronographs.

What Does Each One Ask of You?

This is the question that actually determines which suits a person, and it is rarely discussed.

A mechanical automatic asks for attention. It wants to be worn regularly, or wound, or kept on a winder. It will need servicing every few years at a cost that is not trivial. It will run slightly fast or slightly slow, and a difference of several seconds a day is entirely normal for a well-regulated movement.

Meca-quartz asks for very little. The battery lasts years rather than months, accuracy is measured in seconds per month rather than per day, and the watch is ready whenever you pick it up. There is no winding, no winder and no rhythm to maintain.

On accuracy, the comparison is not close. Quartz regulation is substantially more accurate than any mechanical movement at any price. This is simply true, and it has been true since 1969.

Mechanical watchmaking survived that fact anyway, which tells you accuracy was never the whole of what people wanted.

So Which Is Better?

The question assumes a single scale, and there isn't one.

A mechanical automatic is the better choice for someone who wants the watch to be a continuous object, running on the energy of their own movement, serviceable indefinitely, connected to a tradition that predates industrial manufacturing. It rewards involvement. It also demands it.

Meca-quartz is the better choice for someone who wants a chronograph that feels mechanical to operate without the cost, fragility and maintenance of a mechanical chronograph. It is the honest answer to a specific brief: preserve the interaction, drop the burden.

What matters is that a maker states which one is in the watch and why, rather than allowing the language to blur.

That blurring is common. A watch described only as having a chronograph, or as feeling mechanical, may be either. The distinction affects what you pay, what you maintain and what you own.

How CZARD Uses Both

GENÈVE is powered by a Swiss Sellita mechanical automatic movement, manufactured in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Écru, Lac Léman and Jura Grüen are watches intended to be worn continuously and serviced across decades, where the movement is part of what is being bought.

The VENI, VIDI and VICI chronographs use the VK64 meca-quartz movement. They were designed to be operated, and a chronograph that is unsatisfying to use is a chronograph that stays in a drawer. Quartz regulation handles the timekeeping. The mechanically actuated chronograph handles the part you actually touch.

The movement was chosen to suit the watch rather than to suit a specification sheet.

Every movement reflects an intention.

The right movement is not the one that wins a comparison. It is the one that belongs inside the watch it was chosen to power.
